CDC - Beryllium Processors (Beryllium) - NIOSH Study Summary

Beryllium Processors (Beryllium) 1995. Purpose. Before this study began, we knew that people exposed to beryllium may develop two forms of beryllium disease, acute and chronic. These are lung diseases caused by exposure to beryllium. The acute form is a rare pneumonia-like disease that occurs shortly after very high exposures to beryllium.

Berylliosis - Wikipedia

Berylliosis, or chronic beryllium disease (CBD), is a chronic allergic-type lung response and chronic lung disease caused by exposure to beryllium and its compounds, a form of beryllium poisoning. It is distinct from acute beryllium poisoning, which became rare following occupational exposure limits established around 1950. Berylliosis is an occupational lung disease.

The screening includes a chest x-ray, pulmonary function test/spirometry, and general blood tests. One unique screening test offered in the FWP is the Beryllium Lymphocyte Proliferation Test (BeLPT). The BeLPT is a blood test that measures sensitization to beryllium, a metal that may have been used in some processes on Line 1.

Beryllium sensitization (BeS), chronic beryllium disease (CBD), and lung cancer are the principal health concerns related to exposure to beryllium. Because of a lack of quantitative risk information on low exposure and uncertainties associated with factors that contribute to the development of CBD (see Chapter 3), the committee was unable to identify a chronic inhalation exposure level that is ...

Chronic Beryllium Disease & Nuclear Workers

Beryllium is used frequently in nuclear weapons production at Department of Energy Facilities. What is Chronic Beryllium Disease? Chronic Beryllium Disease (CBD) or berylliosis is an incurable, allergic reaction to the element beryllium. Almost all cases of CBD are resultant from workplace exposure to beryllium dust, fumes, or vapor.

Learn about beryllium, exposure to which can increase your risk of lung cancer. Beryllium is a naturally occurring, light-weight metal used in products such as aerospace components, transistors, nuclear reactors, and golf clubs. Most exposures occur to workers who produce such products.

Beryllium Screening Raises Ethical Issues | Science

GENETIC TESTING Analytical chemist Reed Durham finds himself at the cutting edge of an ethical debate over research on genetic risks in the workplace—but not as an investigator. Instead, Durham has become a significant data point in an effort to understand why a small percentage of people exposed to the metal beryllium—element number four on the periodic table—develop an incurable and ...

Beryllium Exposure Testing | ORAU

What is beryllium? Beryllium is a gray chemical element that is stronger than steel and lighter than aluminum. According to OSHA, its physical properties of great strength-to-weight, high melting point, excellent thermal stability and conductivity, reflectivity and transparency to X-rays make it an essential material in some industries.

amounts of beryllium in comparison to soil as cited in IPCS, 1990. Eco-SSL values for beryllium were derived for soil invertebrates and mammalian wildlife (Table 2.1). Eco-SSL values for beryllium could not be derived for plants or avian wildlife. For these receptor groups, data were insufficient to derive soil screening values. The Eco-SSLs for
